This week the state of New Jersey has added mandatory newborn screening for SCID! “Adding this important screening test will save the lives of babies born each year with this serious immune-deficiency,” said Health Commissioner Mary E. O’Dowd. “The expansion of our comprehensive Newborn Screening Program will continue to improve the quality of life for families in New Jersey.”
With this addition to the list of states who implement SCID screening for newborns, only a week after the Illinois announcement to begin screening for SCID, we can now report that 2/3 of babies – nationwide – are being screened for SCID at the time of their birth. This is great progress.
