SCID Screening Takes a Big Step Forward in the Sunshine State!

Group shot of the Florida Advisory Committee Attendees

IDF volunteer and SCID mom Heather Smith has been advocating for SCID newborn screening for the last year, since the beginning of the IDF SCID Newborn Screening Campaign. On January 28, 2011, she achieved one of her goals as her home state of Florida voted to move forward and add SCID to the state’s Newborn Screening Panel.

Accompanied by 12 volunteers in a van she rented, Heather made the trip to Jacksonville for the Secretary’s Advisory Committee meeting.  There she presented along with expert immunologist Dr. Elena Perez and state representative Matt Hudson.  Following the presentation, the Advisory Committee voted unanimously to recommend inclusion of SCID in the state’s newborn screening panel!

Heather shows us that with dedication and persistence, even a small group can do big things!  Heather will be continuing to work with the IDF SCID Newborn Screening Campaign until all 50 states test for SCID at birth.
